Abalimi Biogas Digester Installation

TODAY (16 Nov) IS THE START OF INSTALLATION FOR THE BIOGAS PROJECT@ABALIMI!

The possibility existed to create a functioning soup kitchen which uses biogas produced on site, in a community
garden in Khayelitsha. The community garden currently exists and is run by an
organisation called AbalimiBezekhaya.
Traditionally, the gardens are run by
members of the community who produce organic vegetable for their own
consumption and to be sold to the public. The vegetables are sold through an
organisation called Harvest of Hope.

The infrastructure exists to support a functional soup kitchen and the space has been utilised as
an informal kitchen in the past. It was proposed to install a biogas digester on
site and connect the gas supply to the infrastructure which will become a “soup
kitchen”. The digester will use the organic waste (cuttings and reject produce)
from the farm as the main substrate, to be supplemented with cow manure if
necessary. The biogas that is produced would be used to cook on in the soup
kitchen. This soup kitchen will be run by members of Abalimi, either as a
business providing to the public, or a kitchen that provides for the members of
Abalimi themselves. The vegetables which are sold through HoH can also be cooked in the kitchen. Biogas produces a slurry by-product,
would be taken to composting to eventually provide fertiliser for the vegetable
garden. Thus, this completes a cycle of waste to valuable manure and cooking
gas.

The technology itself will be
provided by Africa Green Energy and installed by Engineers without Borders (UCT). Technical expertise on biogas operation will be provided by the
Environmental & Process Systems Engineering Research Group (E&PSE) from
the Department of Chemical Engineering at UCT.

The project is mutually
beneficial to all stakeholders and will be providing a renewable energy
solution while improving lives of the community members. It is further hoped
that the success of such an installation would generate awareness around the
viability of effective sustainable technologies in a township setting and would
prove to members of communities at large that biogas is a sound and useful
technology.

EWB Conference Meeting - Saturday, 16 April

We're organizing EWB-SA's First National Conference, with the theme
(to be confirmed) relating to coming together as an organisation for
growth. The 3-day conference will serve a few purposes:

Skills transfer and development for future student EWB committee
members. They will attend workshops relating to setting up and managing
 EWB chapters and projects.

Bring all stakeholders of EWB together to brainstorm and
develop EWB-SA vision and identity as an organisation and plan
strategically for the next year.

Increase awareness of EWB in SA through marketing and exposure.

We're looking for people based in Cape Town and stellenbosch who
will be motivated and committed to the planning and executing of this
conference. The conference dates are set for the first week in December,
so the committee need to plan to be in Cape Town this entire week
(flights will probably be arranged if they are not local).

We want inspired graduates or grad-students who have the time to
commit to this project- i.e. not people who could potentially be
delegates at the conference.

The following portfolios are open:

Program planning and development- someone to plan the student and professional delegate programs and coordinate it on the day.

Student delegate administration- someone to coordinate delegate applications and issues on the day

Guest Speakers - someone to organise and coordinate professional guest speakers and look after them at the event.

Logistics and venue- someone in Cape Town to drive out to the
venues and help with selecting one and dealing with venue issues,
coordinating transport for delegates

Please contact Rhea rqnaidoo@gmail.com and Michelle lokpoohyee@gmail.com asap if you want to be involved in growing EWB-SA.
